Funding agreed for the statue conservation
We have been awarded a grant of £28,500 from a national heritage fund towards the conservation of the statue in the Market Square, recommended by the survey earlier this year.
With £6,000 the trustees had already set aside, that leaves £7,260 to find. Our appeal is open at the museum desk, and every pound given will go to the work on the statue. Gift Aid can be added to donations from UK taxpayers.
The work will take about eight weeks and is planned to begin in February 2027, once the Christmas lights are down, so that the statue is finished and the scaffold gone before the Lilac Fair in May. The statue will be covered while the work is done.
