Heritage walks

Four walks written and drawn by the Trust’s walks group, from a forty-minute stroll under the lilacs to a country walk over Beacon Hill. Each has a map you can print, and a leaflet at the museum desk.

  • The Town Trail

2.1 miles (3.4 km). About 1 hour 30 minutes, with time at each stop. 8 stops.

The museum, the Market Square and the statue, the mill, the bridge, the quay, St Laurence’s Church and the almshouses.

Step-free throughout if you follow the step-free notes at stops 5 and 7. Two kerbs without dropped edges on Water Lane.

  • Bridge, Mill and Mooring

    1.3 miles (2.1 km). About 1 hour. 6 stops.

A riverside loop from the Town Quay: the flood marks, Bridge Meadow, the weir and the mill footbridge, the Town Mill from the water, and the old ferry steps.

Not step-free: the mill footbridge has steps. A step-free there-and-back walk along the Pontar Way from the quay to the weir and back is about 1.2 miles.

  • The Lilac Walk

    0.6 miles (0.9 km). About 40 minutes. 5 stops.

A short, step-free walk from the museum to the statue and up Church Walk under the lilacs to the churchyard and Almshouse Row. Best in the second and third weeks of May.

Step-free throughout, with benches on Church Walk and in the churchyard. Suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs.

  • Beacon Hill and the Old Road

    4.3 miles (6.9 km). About 2 hours 30 minutes. 7 stops.

A country walk from the churchyard across the fields to Beacon Hill and its Bronze Age barrow, along the ridge, and back by the Old Road and Holloway Farm.

Not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. The Old Road is open to farm vehicles.

Guided walks

Volunteer guides lead the Town Trail on the second Saturday of each month from April to October, starting from the museum at 11.00 (£5, members free), and evening walks in the summer. See What’s on. Groups of ten or more can book a guided walk on another day for £4 a person (minimum £40) through the museum desk.

Before you go

The town walks are on pavements and surfaced paths, but the riverside paths can flood in winter: the river leaflet gives the level at which Bridge Meadow becomes impassable. The Beacon Hill walk crosses farmland with livestock. Please keep to the paths, leave gates as you find them, and respect the privacy of the people who live in the almshouses and along Church Walk.
