The museum is open on bank holiday Mondays in the main season, and late on the evening the Christmas lights are switched on. On the Saturday and Sunday of the Lilac Fair it is open 10.00–17.00. Last entry is 20 minutes before closing.

The Study Room, for research visits, is open by appointment on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. See Research and the Study Room.

Admission

Admission to the museum is free. We suggest a donation of £3 a person, which pays for about a quarter of what it costs us to open each day. Donations can be made by card at the desk, and UK taxpayers can add Gift Aid.

Visitor information point

The visitor information point is in the museum foyer and is open whenever the museum is. It is run by the Trust’s volunteers with a grant from the town council, and answered 7,214 enquiries in 2025–26.

We can help with:

  • maps of the town and the walk leaflets;
  • bus and train times, and taxis;
  • places to stay in and around the town (we keep a list, but we do not make bookings);
  • where to eat, and which places are open on Sundays and Mondays;
  • the Thursday market, the Lilac Fair and other events in the town;
  • the moorings at the Town Quay;
  • local footpaths, and where to find the countryside walks.

When the museum is closed, the window by the Sheep Street door has a town map, the week’s events and the numbers for taxis. Information point enquiries by email to info@vengerberg.org are answered on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Facilities

  • Toilets. In the museum, on the ground floor, including an accessible toilet with a baby-changing table. Public toilets in the Riverside car park (20p).
  • Shop. At the desk: walk leaflets, local history books, postcards, Lilac Fair posters and, during the fair, the cordial. Cash and cards.
  • Food and drink. The museum has no café. Visitors are welcome to eat in the garden behind the museum in good weather. There are cafés on High Street, in the Market Square and at the Town Mill.
  • Coats and bags. There are hooks in the foyer and a small number of lockers (£1, returned). Large bags may be left at the desk.
  • Pushchairs. Welcome on the ground floor. They can be left in the foyer while you visit the first floor.
  • Photography. For personal use is welcome everywhere except the Upper Gallery, where some loans cannot be photographed. No flash, please.
  • Dogs. Assistance dogs only, please. There is a water bowl by the garden gate.
  • Wi-Fi. Free, in the foyer and the ground-floor galleries. Ask at the desk for the password.

How long to allow

Most visitors spend about an hour in the museum. The Town Trail takes about an hour and a half, so with lunch in the town a day visit fits comfortably between 10.00 and 16.30.

When it is busy

The museum is busiest on Saturday afternoons, during school holidays and on the Lilac Fair weekend. Weekday mornings in term time are usually quiet in the upper galleries, although the Old Schoolroom may be in use by a school. Thursday is market day, and parking in the Market Square is not available until after 16.00.
